Rodeo time in Mareeba
The Mareeba Rodeo is an annual event that dates back to 1949 – and it’s become bigger every year since. The premier sporting event in Tropical North Queensland, it is also a national icon on the Australian rodeo calendar.
This year’s dates are July 16 and 17 – two days of full-on action and a range of entertainment that gives spectators plenty to watch.
All the usual rodeo competition events including bull ride, saddle bronc and steer wrestling are on the Mareeba programme. Among the other attractions will be Beaut Ute Muster and the Stud Beef Cattle Show.
Mareeba is on the Atherton Tableland 64 kilometres west of Cairns - just a one-hour drive: an area known for its tropical fruits, sugar cane, coffee, mining and cattle. Mareeba is also less then 30 minutes from Atherton, and under an hour to Port Douglas and the Cairns Northern Beaches.
Mareeba offers a diverse range of cultural and recreational experiences. Among the great tourist attractions are hot air balloon flights, cable car rides over the rainforest, wetlands (which is bird watchers paradise) and the Atherton Tableland.
The actual Mareeba area, the gateway to the Gulf of Carpentaria, covers 52,585 square kilometres
