A month of Melbourne festivities
March and April are two months to be in Melbourne in 2011. It’s all happening, kicking off with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival from March 4 to 14 – it’s foodie heaven, the largest celebration of its kind anywhere in the world. This mouth-watering festival attracts food and wine experts from around the globe, including celebrity chefs and leading winemakers.
For fashionistas, there’s L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival from March 14 to 21 – the biggest consumer fashion event in Australia. Dedicated followers of fashion can enjoy a week of runway shows, performances, art exhibitions and, of course, plenty of great parties.
True motor-racing fans will not want to miss out on the 2011 Formula 1 Qantas Australian Grand Prix which brings uber-vroom to Melbourne from March 24 to 27. This is one of Australia’s biggest international sporting events, an on-track and off-track action-packed extravaganza -- four days of world-class racing, festivities and food at Albert Park Lake as sporting greats including Jenson Button and Australia’s Mark Webber vie for the second chequered flag of the season.
On March 30, the month-long Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show brings blossom to the city, the largest horticultural event in the southern hemisphere, and a must-see for garden-lovers.
The Melbourne International Comedy Festival also gets under way on March 30 and chuckles on until April 24 -- an enormous programme of stand-up comedy, cabaret, theatre, street performances and much more. The laughs are dished out by the most popular local comedians and a great line-up of international guests – best of all, the festival includes an extensive free programme (more smiles all round).
With so much going on, accommodation in the city should be secured without too much delay.
